Chapter of Forecasts
74 inscribed ceramic plates.
For this project, I inscribed and refired 74 existing decorative ceramic plates with quotes selected from those created to coincide with the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
In 1893 the American Press Association ran a nationally syndicated column in conjunction with the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. For this “Chapter of Forecasts,” 74 noted Americans from a variety of fields wrote essays presenting their view of how American society would evolve in the next 100 years.
The wide-ranging predictions of life in 1993 helped draw hundreds of thousands of readers to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. This fair was the site of the first Woman’s Building which contained the most extensive exhibition to date of fine art, handicrafts, and inventions created by women including an impressive display of china painting.
