Katsura Tea Garden/Autumn Brook 1999
2-Sided Cut Mural
This piece utilizes a commercial photo mural depicting an Autumn stream, a familiar archetypal view of the landscape. Generic, yet still powerful in its evocation of the collective myth of Nature. Cut into this image is the historic garden plan of the Katsura Tea Garden at the Katsura Imperial Palace, which references a time and place of the obsessive ordering of the natural terrain.
On a formal level, the work confounds the perception of the image through traditional perspective by presenting the diagrammatic overview simultaneously within the depth of the photographic view. This cut print is installed in a large window looking into a gallery that allows viewing from both sides as well as the shadow of the cutout design to be cast on the adjacent wall and further impose the exterior plan on the viewer’s present space.
